Taking the lead: Randleman-based heating and air firm attracting interest for its energy-efficient designs

In the mid-1970s, Joe Millikan was a college student, going to class during the week and camping out with his friends every so often.
Except he wasn't in a tent in the woods. He was in his car at the local gas station. During America's first experience with soaring gas prices and odd-even day rationing, he says, it was better to get in line at night, sleep in his car and fill his tank in the morning.
Even after waiting in a long, long line all night, "they would only sell 10 gallons at a time," he says.
Back then, Millikan was starting his mechanical engineering classes at N.C. State University. "The energy part is what really hit me," he says. "I got real interested in what you can do with energy, how you can save energy."
